Teacher of Languages

Part-time 0.5FTE

Required for September 2018

Salary range £13,000pa to £16,500pa depending on experience

The role of Teacher of Languages currently encompasses the teaching of both French and German (French from Kindergarten through to Year 6, and German from Year 3 to Year 6). Planning for this teaching, assessing children’s learning and organising whole school events (e.g. ‘French Day’) are currently undertaken by our Language Teacher.  There is also an annual trip to France.  This role thus has wide-ranging responsibilities, which include being available to communicate fully with parents, and to participate in events outside normal school hours.

Other duties include:

  •  attendance at staff meetings, parents’ meetings and other parental and school events;
  • preparation of end-of-term and individual reports;
  • reasonable additional assistance to individual children;
  • provision of one lunchtime and one after school club or activity;
  • close liaison and communication with parents;
  • a general commitment to school life as one of its key educational professionals.

An ability to converse in both French and German is essential, along with the skills and linguistic knowledge to engage children within a wide age range.  The successful candidate will have a desire to develop the love of language in children, along with teaching about the culture of different countries.  In parallel, he or she must have a clear commitment to excellence in education, with their own sense of vocation towards the promotion of each child’s learning, growth and development.  Qualified Teacher Status is desirable, but suitable experience or alternative qualifications would be considered for the right candidate.

Terms and Conditions

Teachers are paid in accordance with the Bronte scale. The School’s pension scheme is available.  In reporting lines, class teachers are responsible to the Headmistress in their employment as a whole and to the Deputy Head in general school life.

Applications should comprise a completed school application form, and a covering letter, which should briefly summarise the candidate’s background and reasons for applying. A CV may be added if desired, or if the candidate wishes to provide further information which he or she feels has not been provided for fully on the application form.  The application may be in hard copy or in electronic form, and should be sent to the Bursar, Miss Susan Allison (susan.allison@bronteschool.co.uk)

The closing date for applications is 9am Monday 23rd April 2018.  Interviews  take place on Wednesday 9th May 2018.

Bronte School and Nursery Ltd is an equal opportunities employer. Information about the school

Bronte School is an independent preparatory school for children aged 3 to 11. The School’s ethos is based upon the twin pillars of academic excellence and of being a family school. A stimulating and purposeful curriculum is accompanied by high quality academic management, which aims to provide inspiration and challenge for all the children of the school, analysing in detail progress and attainment for each individual boy and girl. Educational breadth is seen as complementary to depth and level of study. Art, music, PE and drama take their place alongside the humanities, languages, science, and the core subjects of English and mathematics.

The School has considerable success in supporting children through to a place at their first-choice school. For many this is a selective or super-selective grammar school, whilst others also go on independent schools or other types of state schools. Another route is to a major 13-18 boarding school, via a feeder prep school for Years 7 and 8.

Bronte is a small school, of around 150 pupils, in a single class entry, with maximum class size of 20. The teachers are dedicated, professional and supportive, caring deeply for the children and getting to know them very well. This personal attention forms a central part of the School’s family atmosphere. Pastoral care is very strong, and is seen as fundamental to the children’s success, happiness and sense of self-fulfilment.

The School has a Christian tradition, at the same time as having extensive diversity in the ethnic and cultural composition of its familes, reflecting that of the local area.

Bronte is privately owned, by Nicholas Clements. As Proprietor, he is responsible for the governance of the School. The Headmistress is Emma Wood. There is an Advisory Board, which provides support for the governance.

Bronte Nursery, the School’s sister setting, is large, high quality nursery, ages 3 months to 4 years. It is located about 200m away, also on Pelham Road.
