St James the Great Academy was fast-tracked to become part of Academies Enterprise Trust (AET) on 1st April 2012.  We are a one-form entry primary school with nursery and serve the most deprived area in the Tonbridge and Malling District in Kent.  We have an award-winning (Kent Design Awards) building and are well resourced. The strapline "to make our best better" is evident through the dedication and commitment of all staff in supporting learning throughout the school. Personalised learning is at the core of our academy and thus My Unique Pupil Progress meetings and a variety of interventions encourage all children to achieve. In March 2014 we achieved 'good' in all areas from Ofsted and were awarded silver from Investors in People.

We are seeking to appoint two apprentice teaching assistants to provide support to teachers and students in the classroom in lessons and become an integral part of the school support workforce.

Working as an apprentice Teaching Assistant you will provide support to teachers in preparing for lessons and helping create a safe and enjoyable learning environment for all pupils. During lessons, you'll work together with the class teacher to support pupils with classroom activities and help to manage behaviour. Excellent communication and enthusiasm will be key in supporting all pupils to progress, achieve and overcome any problems. You will support all areas of the curriculum including literacy, numeracy and ICT within the classroom. You'll also accompany teaching staff and pupils on trips and other out-of-school activities. You'll also act as a role model for pupils and be a positive influence on their behaviour and performance at school. So it's important that you demonstrate maturity and excellence in all you do.

You will complete either a Level 2 BTEC Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in the Classroom or Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning in the Classroom.  You may also be required to complete Literacy, Numeracy and IT Functional Skills (this will be determined by existing qualifications).  Your Trainer/Assessor will assess you in the workplace every 4 weeks. In between these meetings you will have dedicated time away from your job to work on the apprenticeship and collate evidence for your apprenticeship e-portfolio with ongoing support from your Manager and Trainer/Assessor.

At the end of your apprenticeship you'll of achieve the nationally recognised Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification, as well as valuable work experience, that will provide you with the best chance possible of being offered a full-time Teaching Assistant position.

To be eligible for the Apprenticeship, applicants must have resided in the UK or EEA for 3 years prior to the start of the Apprenticeship and must not hold a level 4 (or equivalent) qualification or above.
