We seek to appoint an enthusiastic and able teacher of Design Technology, able to teach across the age range and to challenge the thinking of all students, including the most able. This is a rare opportunity to teach an important subject within an outstanding outward-facing and forward-thinking grammar school. Opportunities to teach outside the department may be available to the right candidate. We offer a comprehensive package of support and staff development, including, within the Coastal Academies Trust, opportunities to prepare for and experience leadership roles across a variety of pastoral and curriculum settings.

There is potential for the post to become full-time from September 2018 and for the successful candidate to become Head of Department.

If you are an ambitious and effective teacher, interested in the possibility of teaching Design Technology at Dane Court Grammar School and would like to know more, we encourage you to contact Andrew Fowler (Headteacher) for an informal conversation and to arrange a tour of the school. Applicants should complete the school’s application form and submit this with a covering letter.

In September 2017 we are launching a new sixth form course, Tech-level 3 Diploma Design Engineering, as part of our highly-successful International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme. We have already recruited a cohort of students for this course, which will lead onto level 3 and level 4 apprenticeships and university courses in engineering and design. From January to July of year 12, students will spend one day each week working in industry.

We expect the Design Engineering course to be a popular one, since it answers an increasing need for engineers at technical level. Once the course is taught in both year 12 and year 13 there will be the need for full-time teaching, and the possibility therefore also exists for the successful candidate to become Head of Design Technology in September 2018.

Numbers are also buoyant for GCSE Design and Technology for year 10 next year. At key stage 3 the subject is currently integrated with computing, to encourage able students to apply computing knowledge and understanding to robotics and engineering applications. Engineering and design students at Dane Court have a high profile, successfully competing in a wide variety of outreach events and competitions in the region. Working closely with our excellent maths and science teachers, the department has a good track record of preparing students for careers in engineering at all levels.

Design and engineering teachers are based in the technologies office with their colleagues from food technology and health and social care, giving opportunities for collaboration, although the two departments are distinct from each other and the subjects are taught discretely at all levels. We have well-equipped workshops and dedicated computers for CAD work.
