English Teacher – “Secondary Ready” Lead

TLR2b (£4,692)

OUR SCHOOL

This is an exciting time to join The Charles Dickens School, as it joined Barton Court Academy Trust (BCAT) on 1 March 2017, working in partnership with Barton Court Grammar School, an outstanding rated co-educational grammar school in Canterbury. This new venture will see The Charles Dickens students and staff benefit from outstanding leadership and the sharing of best practice. The Trust is committed to excellence in professional development.

THE POST

The Governors wish to appoint an excellent English and Literacy specialist teacher to lead and develop the “Secondary Ready” programme in Years 7 & 8 in this oversubscribed non-selective, co-educational school which benefits from the state-of-the-art new buildings and is situated in a beautiful part of the South East coast. The School enjoys a good reputation locally, with dedicated colleagues and enthusiastic students. Staff hold high expectations for all students and work tirelessly to continue to raise attainment and achievement.

The successful candidate should be able to deliver excellence in the classroom, providing innovative and inspirational teaching and learning, and will be responsible for developing and leading the “Secondary Ready” programme to Years 7 & 8 students as well as to teach English to KS3 and KS4 as required. A KS2/KS3 specialist in English is desirable as the vision for the programme is one which is literacy and project based, offered to students with lower prior attainment and/or additional Learning or EAL needs.

This is an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced colleague to work with English and SEN colleagues to build a vibrant and outstanding department. This post is suitable for an experienced candidate with a track record of success in English at KS2/3 who is looking to further their expertise.

The Trust

Barton Court Academy Trust (BCAT) is a multi-academy Trust which was established in 2017.

It currently consists of three secondary schools: Barton Court Grammar School, an 11-18 years, mixed selective school in the heart of Canterbury, rated “Good” with many outstanding features by Ofsted in February 2020; The Charles Dickens School, an 11-16 years mixed non-selective school in Broadstairs, rated “Good” by Ofsted in March 2023 and Barton Manor Free School, an 11–18 years non-selective mixed school in the heart of Canterbury which opened to Year 7 in September 2022 and as the school grows now has Y7 & 8 from September 2023.

Our School

The Charles Dickens School is a successful, over-subscribed, non-selective 11-18 school located in Broadstairs, Kent. We have a vision and a determination to provide our community with an excellent school and we are making great progress towards this. Our results in 2022 identified us as the most improved school in Kent (out of 101 secondary schools) and one of the most improved schools in the country, and our results in 2023 are similarly strong. Schools Week identified us as the 8th most improved school in the country between 2019 and 2023, for schools with an above average proportion of Pupil Premium pupils. Our recent Ofsted Inspection in March 2023 graded the School "Good" in every category.

To work here is to embrace the challenges of an economically-diverse community and understand the influence education has in addressing social immobility. There are few schools in the country where a teacher’s ability to change lives is so evident. Without hyperbole, this is a career-defining mission. We’re looking for brilliant people to join us on our journey.

The School has excellent facilities. All rooms are equipped with state-of-the art electronic interactive whiteboards. There are excellent specialist facilities for sport, hospitality, engineering, dance, drama, music and art. We have a Specialist Resource Provision for visually-impaired children. We offer and value a broad curriculum aimed at promoting talent beyond traditional academic subjects. Our significant investment in professional development drives colleagues’ continuous improvement. This is a place where everyone improves regardless of their career stage.
