Appointment of Head of Biology

(MPS/UPS) plus TLR2b £4,397 from September 2017

(Opportunity to secure TLR2 £6,450 for a broader responsibility in KS4 Science)

Borden Grammar School is committed to providing students in Swale with every advantage that being a selective school can offer. That the school has secured two good and improving Ofsted reports in 2013 and 2016, is also reflected in the improvements shown within Science as a whole and Biology in particular during this period.

The Science department is successful in many ways. Science subjects have a high take-up rate in KS5, where all three disciplines are popular. At GCSE the majority of students are entered for triple science. In 2013 the percentage of students securing two A*-C grades at GCSE was 84%, in 2016 it had risen to 98% and the proportion of students gaining A-A* grades improved significantly, especially in Biology. In KS5 there is work to be done, particularly in relation to the proportion of students securing A*-B grades. Extra-curricular projects are common place within the department across all three key stages; the successful applicant would be expected to contribute willingly to this ethos.

This is a role for a suitably ambitious teacher, who is committed to achieving high standards in all areas of school life; you will demonstrate the potential to contribute a great deal to the future development of Borden Grammar School. You will have a clear personal ethos about the achievement of boys as well as the advantages that a grammar school education can bring to the community we serve. You will certainly possess both the strategic thinking about how to raise achievement, and the drive to achieve the best for all students that you are responsible for and staff that you lead.

The closing date is Wednesday 29 March; the school reserves the right to consider the merit of early applications. Interviews will be scheduled for Thursday 30 March or earlier for the right candidate. The interview process will be designed for you to demonstrate both your leadership and teaching ability. If you would like to apply please return a fully completed application form (leaving no gaps in employment). Please do not provide a CV.

In your application please give consideration to:

  • What your vision and ethos for the Biology department would be.
  • How you would secure high standards for your students.

A Job description and person specification for the role is attached.
