Our caretaker is due to retire shortly so we are therfore looking to recruit a new entusiastic member of our school team. 

The overall purpose of this role is to be responsible for the security, safety, cleanliness and general maintenance of the school site. To ensure that the premises are fit for purpose and meet the requirements of health and safety legislation and the curriculum.

This post is responsible to the Business Manager although “day to day” communication and cooperation with head of school and school staff is essential, the post holder would be a main key holder.

Hours of work
This post is part time, all year round with core hours of 20 hours per week but the post holder will need a flexible approach to hours worked and be able to attend to "call outs" outside of normal working hours with the possibility to work additional hours as required. Annual leave will not be taken during term time.

Core Responsibilities -Security & Maintenance of the Premises & Grounds


To secure school building at the end of the day.

To be a first point of contact in an emergency call-out situation.
To undertake basic maintenance of heating, lighting, plumbing, security systems, building fabric, decoration, furniture fixtures & fittings and grounds to ensure they operate safely and efficiently, are clean and free from litter.

To carry out basic safety checks on playground equipment and water hygiene.
To check the site and buildings for damage and security issues on arrival at the premises, and to report any defects of building, furniture, fittings and equipment to the Business Manager, ensuring that serious hazards are reported immediately.
To keep paths, entrances and walkways free of ice and snow to ensure the safety of students, parents, staff and visitors.
To read Gas, Electric and Water meters as required, and to ensure the daily switching off of all lights and appropriate small power sockets.
To ensure that clear passage is maintained on emergency escape routes.
To arrange, move, set-up furniture and facilities as specified by staff.
To ensure that all plant, equipment, furniture and materials are stored safely and securely in order to prevent unauthorised access and potential accidents/misuse.
To assist in the receipt of parcels and to deliver to classrooms.
To sign in/ out and supervise visiting contractors and service providers, ensuring they have access to school’s, fire evacuation procedures and asbestos register

To oversee that the contract cleaners and report any concerns.

To maintain authorised only access to the site particularly at the end of the day with special regard to parents’ vehicles on site.

Information about the school

Long Mead Community Primary School is situated in Tonbridge. Its attractive site has a large playing field and playgrounds and is surrounded by woodlands yet close to the town. Forest School Studies are offered on site as part of our curriculum using our wonderful grounds and our own trained member of staff.

We have one of the few integral nursery schools in Kent enabling all children to benefit by being part of the school community from the age of three. Our classrooms are large and airy and we have a dedicated art room, computer suite, science lab and well stocked library, as well as several breakout spaces for small group work.
