Communication Support Worker (preferably with British Sign Language Level 3 minimum) to support a profoundly deaf student.

Pay Scale: Sandwich Technology Range 4-6, points 11 - 20 (£11,232 to £14,239 pro rata to £16,799 to £21,296 full time equivalent) dependent on qualifications and experience.

Hours: 30 hours per week, term time only

Vacancy type: temporary attached to child

We require an enthusiastic Communication Support Worker, who is suitably qualified in British Sign Language (BSL Level 3 minimum) and who is experienced in working with profoundly deaf pupils in a secondary school environment. The successful applicant will be expected to support the deaf student who is currently completing her final year of AS Level English/A-Level Science and to facilitate access to all aspects of the curriculum as well as promoting the student’s social inclusion within the school community. Other job requirements may include production of differentiated learning materials, working 1:1 to reinforce and consolidate lesson content and regular liaison with the visiting Specialist Teacher for Hearing Impairment.

We are seeking a person who is academically competent with good standards of numeracy and literacy skills. The post holder will also be required to be primarily ‘deaf aware’, patient, understanding, self-motivated, able to use own initiative and flexible in approach. Strong administrative, IT and organisational skills would be advantageous as well as having the ability to liaise and communicate effectively with other staff.

Please be aware that this position is dependent on the pupil remaining at the school. Whilst not guaranteed, it is expected that the deaf student will attend Sandwich Technology School until May/June 2017.

The school is committed to safeguarding children and the post is subject to an enhanced disclosure check.

Information about the school

STS is an 11 to 18, mixed, secondary school that has an excellent reputation across Kent where "Pupils engage well in learning. They enjoy their lessons and behave well. Pupils show respect for each other and value the work their teachers do to support them" (OFSTED May 2019).

The success of our students from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form is due to the ‘can do, will do’ attitude that is the hallmark of staff and students alike. At STS we ‘Hold fast that which is good’: a broad and engaging curriculum; interesting, inspiring and innovative classroom practice; as well as a whole host of enriching extra-curricular activity. Throughout their time at STS the students are provided with quality advice, support and guidance to help them progress and grow academically, personally and vocationally. We recognise and celebrate diversity and understand that a ‘one size fits all’ approach is inappropriate for the unique individuals we serve.
