About the role: The Hundred of Hoo Academy are looking for an inspiring Teacher of Music to join our team in September 2022, or earlier if available. Our successful candidate will deliver high-quality learning opportunities for our students in this curriculum area. Applications are welcomed from both experienced and Early Career Teachers (ECTs) as we can offer fantastic professional development at every stage of a teacher’s career.

Our pedagogical approach is based on the latest research and ensures that teaching is efficient and effective whilst prioritising staff wellbeing. We ask our teachers to plan for a rigorous learning experience in which knowledge is broken down into manageable chunks so as to prevent cognitive overload and allow our students to remain focused on what is important. We believe that knowledge should and needs to be taught explicitly from the front by the subject expert in the room. Working in this way allows our students to focus on the recall and activation of that knowledge and bring it to bear on conceptually focused questions. Through direct instruction, retrieval practice, low stakes testing and question level analysis in all year groups, we believe that subject gaps will be tackled as they occur and that proactively working in this manner will eliminate the need for reactive intervention in exam year groups.

Music has designed their curriculum using the KS3 National Curriculum and it is delivered under the framework of the IB Middle Years programme. As an All-through Academy we have also referenced the KS2 Programmes of Study in their initial planning.

With music integral in so many areas of our recreational lives, the Musical Department at The Hundred of Hoo Academy sees the educational provision of Music as an essential ingredient to students’ learning. Music lessons are designed to be as inclusive as possible to cater for every student, no matter what their starting point is, and so that progress and challenge is appropriate and robust.  Our students also benefit from regular trips to venues and our in-house academy performances.

Through studying Music, students will listen to a broad curriculum of genres and styles gaining confidence in how to apply their critical faculties; they will also rehearse and perform in every lesson to build on their knowledge of practical skills, their problem-solving and their resilience. Creative thinking is promoted and explored in every lesson with authentic engagement and enthusiasm.

The successful candidate will be responsible for classroom teaching, one to one piano and vocal teaching and leading a choir.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong subject knowledge and enthusiasm for Music.
  • Experience of teaching Key Stage 4.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the research and cognitive science behind what makes effective teaching.
  • The desire to forge strong relationships with colleagues and willingness to collaborate for the benefit of all students and staff.
