7 Virtual Adventures to Entertain Children During Lockdown


Half term is normally an opportunity for many families to get out and about. Perhaps previously you caught up with friends and family or you planned several days out to zoos, museums, country parks and much more. Whilst half term in lockdown might bring on feelings of anxiety or concerns for how you will keep your children entertained, it does present the opportunity to try out some new virtual adventures.

Here are 7 ideas that you might be interested in trying:

1) Mimamaking (6 yrs.+, Free)

Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art have teamed up with artist and illustrator @KatieDraws. Katie is known for sessions that focus on making art with objects found at home. All of Katie’s sessions can be found on the Mimamaking YouTube channel. There are brilliant ideas from making your own drawing book, mail art, paper origami, paper weaving, patterns, sculptures and so much more!

2) Sea City Museum (Monday 15th February, Tuesday 16th February 6 -12 yrs., Up to £7.50 a device)

Based at the heart of Southampton, Sea City Museum tells the story of the people of the city, their fascinating lives, and historic connections with the sea. They are running a series of events including:

Titanic (Monday 15th February) Learn about the history of the Titanic, and the lives of those on board during her tragic voyage.  Discover more about the jobs, and lives of the passengers and crew. 

Shiver me timbers (Tuesday 16th February): A fun, interactive online session about pirates, buccaneers and privateers! Play games, learn pirate sayings and discover mysterious pirate objects.

3) 30 Day Lego Challenge (free)

If you have any Lego enthusiasts at home, then this challenge is for you! The 30-Day Lego Challenge gives children a new task every day to build an incredible creation out of their favourite Lego building blocks. Why not start this in half term and share your children’s fantastic creations with your family and friends?

4) Nature Live - Natural History Museum (Tuesday 15th February, Older Children, free)

Nature Live is back for 2021 every Tuesday. From meteorites to mammoths, evolution to the climate crisis, Nature Live Online is a great way to explore the natural world. All past sessions are also available to watch including my personal favourite is ‘How did a Walrus end up in a London Graveyard?’

5) Family Workshop: Portraits (Wednesday 17th February, 6 yrs.+, £7.50 per ticket)

When was the first portrait painted? Why do people paint them at all? Try out some drawing challenges and then create your own self portrait at this interactive online session.

6) Virtual London Zoo (All ages, free)

From the comfort of your homes take a trip to London’s virtual zoo. Watch zookeeper videos and access the webcams and live streams to see the animals in action. 

Once you have visited the animals, why not design your own zoo? Thanks to Chester Zoo - Design your own zoo you have everything you need to complete this activity with your children.

7) Planetarium (Saturday 20th February and Sunday 21st February, 7 yrs.+, £5 per device)

Join a live online planetarium show presented by an astronomer from the Royal Observatory Greenwich. Starting from Earth, you will travel visiting objects like planets, moons, and asteroids. 

Half term in lockdown, juggling children and work may seem a momentous task.
