Top 5 Timeless Children’s Books

The Rainbow Fish - Marcus Pfister

Rainbow Fish is an object of admiration with his dazzling multicoloured scales. There is simply no other fish quite like him in the sea kingdom. Unsurprisingly, his beautiful scales attract the attention of the other fish. They ask Rainbow Fish to share his shimmering scales with them. At first, he refuses to share and is determined to keep all of his scales for himself. He earns a reputation for being rude. In turn, this means the other fish do not want to be his friend and he becomes lonely. Eventually, the Rainbow Fish shares his scales with the other fish. He is overcome with happiness once he shares his special scales. The moral of the story is not only the importance of sharing but also the happiness and joy that we experience from giving.

Winnie the Pooh – A. A. Milne

The Winnie the Pooh book series is loved by children and adults alike. There are 25 titles in the Winnie the Pooh book series as well as being adapted into film and television. The overarching theme prevalent in all stories in the Winnie the Pooh collection is friendship. Winnie the Pooh and his friends encapsulate the importance of solid, dependable and long-lasting friendships. No matter what adventures they embark on or trouble they get themselves into, Winnie and his friends are always there for each other and come out stronger as a result. Friendship is, indeed, something all humans thrive on and it is essential to show children the positive effects that strong friendship can have.

Charlotte’s Web – E. B. White

Another classic children’s story that beautifully demonstrates the power of friendship is Charlotte’s Web. Charlotte’s love for Wilbur ultimately helps to save his life on multiple occasions. Charlotte ultimately sacrifices herself in her bid to save Wilbur. The story shows the lengths we go to for loved-ones, and demonstrates the powerful feelings that true friendship evokes.

Matilda – Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl was, and remains to be, one of the greatest children’s authors of all-time. His literature is adored by children featuring in book corners up and down the country. It was difficult to choose just one Roald Dahl book to feature in this blog! Matilda contains many positive messages and meanings. One of which is the power of education. Matilda is proactive and keen to learn, which ultimately allows her to develop into an accomplished and talented young lady. A second prevalent theme is the power of reading. Matilda’s discovery of literature not only helps her on her road to greatness but allows her an escape from an unhappy home life. Reading takes Matilda away from her reality and allows her to see there are other happier ways of life. But the most striking theme in Matilda is how good triumphs evil. Ultimately, Miss Honey (Matilda’s kind and caring teacher) and Matilda get their happy ending.

Giraffes Can’t Dance - Giles Andreae

The power of self-confidence and self-belief should never be underestimated. Sadly, many children lack confidence in themselves and might feel unable to reach their dreams. This beautiful story by Giles Andreae tells the tale of Gerald the Giraffe who longs to dance. However, being a giraffe means Gerald is far from a stereotypical dancer with his long neck and slender legs so Gerald doubts his abilities. With a little help from a wise cricket, Gerald finds his feet at the Jungle Dance and sways to his own beat. Ultimately, this story teaches children to embrace difference and helps them to realise we are all unique. Moreover, being different should not hinder your dreams. This story ultimately aims to help build confidence, self-belief and self-esteem.
