5 Free Things to Do in Kent Summer 2020

As the UK gradually emerges from lockdown and our favourite outdoor activities begin to become more accessible, it is a great time to start thinking about your summer plans. Although the summer holidays will certainly be different this year, there are still plenty of fun and, most importantly, free things to do in Kent!

After spending months indoors, the thought of keeping the kids entertained for another 6 weeks may seem daunting. Never fear, we have rounded up 5 free things to do in Kent this summer to ease boredom on a budget:

1) Explore Kent By Foot

Put on your most comfortable footwear and stock up with plenty of water – it’s time to head out on a walk around the beautiful Kentish countryside. There are so many walks to choose from; you could enjoy amazing views across the Kent Weald, the bleak beauty of Dungeness or hop from town to town. Kent Ramblers has a great selection of walks with maps included, or check out these Walks in Kent.

2) Enjoy a Picnic in the Park

There is just something special about packing up your lunch and enjoying it outside surrounded by nature. The great thing about having a picnic is that you don’t even need to head anywhere fancy to make this a fun day out. Head to your local park (or choose from one of our 7 favourite picnic spots if you fancy trying somewhere new), pack up your favourite sandwiches and snacks and bring a couple of outdoor games with you. Badminton, anyone?

3) Cycle the Historical Viking Coastal Trail

On the lookout for a new cycling route? The Viking Coastal Trail is a 32 mile stretch along the Thanet coastline offering a wealth of beautiful scenery and historical treasures. The route can be easily broken up into more manageable sections (hats off to you if you attempt the full 32 miles!) – check out this guide from Visit Kent before setting off to choose the best trail for you.

4) Roam the White Cliffs of Dover

One of the most iconic landmarks in Kent, the White Cliffs of Dover attract visitors during all seasons of the year. With magnificent views across the English Channel, walks across the top off the cliffs and plenty of wildlife to spot, it is easy to see why visitors return to the cliffs throughout the year!

Note: The car park currently has limited spaces and The National Trust have asked visitors to return later if the car park is full.

5) Head to the Beach

There are so many great beaches to choose from in Kent! If you are after golden sands and beautiful scenery, why not spend a day at Botany or Joss Bay? In the mood for a pebble beach and coastal town? Head to Hythe, Dungeness and Dymchurch for a traditional seaside town atmosphere.
