10 Sports to Try This Summer

The sun is shining, the evenings are that little bit longer, the kids are on holiday for 6 weeks… oh wait 6 whole weeks? How am I going to fill 6 whole weeks, I hear you ask? Well fear not, we have put together a list of 10 sports you can try this summer to keep kids (and of course you adults!) fit, healthy and free from boredom.

Badminton

With 2 million people playing badminton across the United Kingdom on a regular basis, badminton is the world’s number one racket sport. A 2 or 4 player game, badminton has been an Olympic sport since 1992 and is enjoyed all over the world.

Badminton can be played just about anywhere, either in your back garden, the local park or why not rent a court at your local leisure centre. An enjoyable game, that will get the heart racing.

Canoeing & Kayaking

It’s a beautiful day, the sun is shining, birds tweeting in the trees, the local river is glistening, what can I do today? I know, I’ll hire a canoe!

Why not take a gentle paddle down the river, arrange to meet family members for a picnic on route and enjoy a day out on the canals of Kent. If you’re feeling brave, you can even do some sea kayaking…

Cricket

Ahhh the summer of 2019, the year England won the Cricket World Cup, a joyous day! What better reason to assemble your friends and family and head down to the local park and enjoy a spot of cricket.

Pack up the picnic basket, leave plenty of room for scones and cucumber sandwiches and enjoy a couple of overs in the sun.

Footgolf

Now I can’t decide, shall I play football today or hit a round of 18? Better still, why don’t I try Footgolf!

Using the principles of golf, with the bonus of a large football sized golf ball, why not kick your way around 18 over sized holes and see if you can come in on par.

With 90 courses across the United Kingdom, you’ll be sure to find one near you on the Footgolf Website.

Ice Skating

It’s inevitable, this is the United Kingdom, there will come a day during the summer where it will rain. When it rains, you don’t want to be outside, so what can you do instead?

Why not prepare for winter and don the coat and gloves and head over to your local ice rink and enjoy a couple of laps of the ice.

Rounders

The primary school sport of choice. How many of us remember playing rounders at primary school and being very competitive over it?

Another ‘fun for all the family’ sport, why not head down to your local park with family and friends and play a couple of hours’ worth of rounders? Another great opportunity for an afternoon picnic and a chance to have a laugh whilst taking in the warm summer sun.

Skateboarding

Now some of you may now be thinking ‘hang on, skateboards are to get you from A to B, that’s not a sport?’

Well, the definition of sport is ‘an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or other for entertainment’, so skateboarding is a most definitely a sport!

Over the last couple of years skateboarding has had quite the resurgence and now there are plenty of places where you can safely perform tricks on your skateboard and test out your balance skills.

You can find your local skate park by visiting The Skateparks Project website.

Swimming

Another one that might take you back to your school days. A stable part of the national curriculum, swimming is not only good for you, it keeps you nice and cool in the process.

Why not set yourself a swimming challenge and try and swim the equivalent of a marathon over the summer holidays? You’ve got six whole weeks, so that’s only 50 laps a day…

Table Tennis

Have you got a kitchen table? How about some table tennis bats? If so, this could be the sport for you this summer.

A need for precision and accuracy (as well as quick reactions!) table tennis will pass by the time. So why not try and release your inner Forrest Gump this summer and play ‘ping pong’?

Water Skiing & Wakeboarding

Finally, but no means least, a sport for the adventure seekers out there.

Kent has some fabulous coastlines, so why not see if you can get a spot of water skiing in this summer, or on a nice calm day head out on a wakeboard and take in the coastline from the sea?

With all sports you can cause yourself an injury, so make sure you feel comfortable doing the sport before you start taking part and ensure you wear all the necessary protective equipment.
