Joanne Rowling, who celebrates her birthday on the 31st July, is a British novelist, philanthropist, film and television producer and screenwriter; best known for writing the Harry Potter fantasy series. The Harry Potter books have won multiple awards and sold more than 500 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling book series in history.  

Rowling has lived a "rags to riches" life story, in which she progressed from living on benefits to becoming the world's first billionaire author. The 2016 Sunday Times Rich List estimated Rowling's fortune at £600 million, ranking her as the joint 197th richest person in the UK.
