Local and Community History Month


The aim of Local and Community History Month (1-31st May) is to increase awareness and promote local history as well as encourage members of the community to participate in historical events. 

We’ve collated some events coming up in the next few months to celebrate the rich local history in Kent at some of Kent’s most beautiful locations.

1940s Weekend 20th - 21st May at Kent and East Sussex Railway, Tenterden 

The clock has been turned back to the 1940s where you can witness spitfire displays, vehicles, vintage fashion and live music and dancing.

Night at the Museum 20th - 21st May at Quex House, Birchington 

Camp out in front of the animal dioramas and take part in games in the gardens, torchlight tours and craft activities.

Meet the Darwins 30th May - 3rd June at Down House- Home of Charles Darwin, Downe 

Find out what life was like in Victorian England through the eyes of Charles and Emma Darwin. 

Grand Medieval Joust 27th - 29th May at Leeds Castle, Maidstone

Step back in time to the middle ages and witness what a medieval war would look like with fully armoured knights jousting, fire power, mounted skill at arms displays and trebuchet demonstrations.

Edwardian Life Event 27th May - June 4th at Hever Castle, Edenbridge 

Go back in time to the Edwardian period before the First World War and take part in old fashioned lessons, lepidopterist butterfly walks, silhouette workshops and vintage fairground games. 

Battle of Medway 8th - 17th June, various locations and dates throughout Medway 

There will be a series of events, exhibitions and activities to commemorate 350th anniversary of The Battle of Medway. 

A Weekend for Dad 17th - 18th June, Penshurst Place, Tonbridge

Experience what life would have been like in the Roman Army during the invasion of Britain 43AD.
