Primary Class Teacher

Permanent/ Full Time position. Applications welcome from Newly Qualified Teachers and experienced practitioners.

MPS-UPS plus SEN £2106 - £4158

Start: April 2019

Elms School is a special day school for children with social, emotional, mental health and behavioural difficulties. Pupils in the Secondary department have learning difficulties as well. The school has a mixed roll of 136 students between the ages of 5 and 16.

At Elms School, we aim to support pupils with learning to manage their emotions and behaviour so that they are better able to manage independently when they leave us. In addition, we aim to provide an excellent academic education so that they can fulfil their potential.  We therefore provide a combination of academic teaching along with various therapeutic interventions to address all their needs

The school has been assessed as Good following the Ofsted inspection in October 2017. The most recent inspection report was published in November 2017.

Due to an increase in demand for places, we are opening a seventh Primary class in the school. We are looking for someone to teach initially in Year 5.  In order to enable continuity, we like our Y5 teachers to take the class through to Year 8, following a predominantly Primary curriculum and model of teaching.

Previous experience working with children with special educational needs is desirable but not essential. However, candidates need to have much empathy and a desire to make a difference to the lives of our exceptional young people, many of whom have had a difficult start in life.  Candidates will need to have excellent behaviour management skills and some knowledge of the issues around attachment difficulties.

We are looking for a dynamic, innovative and creative individual who is a good team player, with a high level of emotional intelligence and resilience, a flexible approach to their work and an ability to embrace change. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to engage our pupils in learning and to meet their needs in lessons.

Visits to the school are encouraged and for more information please contact the school office.

Elms School is committed to safeguarding and promoting child welfare. This position is subject to an enhanced DBS check, pre employment medical clearance, good references and verification of the right to work in the UK.

Closing date: Monday 7th January 2019

Interviews: Friday 11th January 2019

The school requires a completed application form – no CV’s accepted.

Information about the school

Elms School is a nurturing place of learning that has high expectations for all.

Our therapeutic approaches nurture students so they form relationships and to learn to; self-regulate; demonstrate respect; take responsibility; understand their and others’ emotions.

Our curriculum enriches the experiences of our students, develops independence and promotes collaboration.

Elms is a special school for pupils with social, emotional, mental health and learning needs. Most pupils display associated challenging behaviours resulting from a variety of difficulties and needs, including PTSD, attachment difficulties, ODD, ADHD, ASD and FASD.

Our broad and balanced curriculum is relevant, engaging and provides opportunities to achieve academic success as well as equipping them with skills for life. Our highly-trained staff provide bespoke therapeutic interventions, such as Thrive, to target developmental gaps and enable pupils to manage their behaviour and regulate their emotions so that they can form meaningful relationships throughout their lives. We also use Restorative Approaches to build and maintain a sense of community and to provide our pupils with the ability and attitude to respect the viewpoints of others and, when necessary, take responsibility for resolving conflict and putting things right.

In our Ofsted inspection in March 2023, Elms continues to be a Good school.

We have a large team, including our transport team who bring the pupils to and from school in our fleet of MPVs.
