Role Description

As the Chair of a Local Governing Body, you will work with school and Trust leaders to promote and maintain high standards of educational achievement as well as providing clear leadership and direction to your LGB and keep it focused on its core functions:

  • Making sure the LGB sets a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction for the school, ensuring that your LGB stays engaged with the Trust.
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the students and performance management of the staff.
  • Providing effective oversight of the school’s financial performance and ensuring value for money.

    Principal Responsibilities & Duties

    In addition to those duties and responsibilities performed by all LGB Governors, the Chair is required to:

    • Lead effective governance with strong leadership and clear strategic focus, by ensuring the school meets all statutory and regulatory requirements, provides value for money and business is conducted efficiently and effectively;
    • Upholding the values of the school and Trust by example, and to ensure that the organisation promotes equality and diversity for all its stakeholders;
    • Be a critical friend to the school and Head Teacher by offering constructive challenge, support and encouragement;
    • Put school improvement at the centre of all policies and strategies, making sure scrutiny is focused on the school’s priorities;
    • Develop an effective team, by recruiting effective governors, encouraging all LGB members to contribute their skills, experience and opinions in order to ensure adequate constructive challenge and robust scrutiny;
    • Make sure that new governors are properly inducted and that all governors engage in appropriate training, development and experience;
    • Facilitating effective LGB meetings, liaising with the Clerk, confirming the agenda and ensuring that the business is covered efficiently and effectively in those meetings;
    • Make decisions on behalf of the governing body in cases of urgency between meetings (Chair’s Action);
    • Hold a casting vote in the event of a tie;
    • Ensuring, in liaison with the Clerk, that Standing Orders and the Trust Scheme of Delegation are adhered to;
    • Representing the school and Trust at functions, meetings and in the wider media, as agreed.
